OCTOBER 2019: EXTRAORDINARY MONTH OF MISSION AT ST JOHN’S BEAUMONT
October 2019: Extraordinary Month of Mission at St John’s Beaumont
100 years ago, Pope Benedict XV released the encyclical Maximum Illud, which called on Catholics to bring the Good News to all peoples (Missio Ad Gentes). To commemorate this anniversary, Pope Francis has declared October 2019 to be an Extraordinary Month of Mission (EMM). This special month of prayer and action calls us all to renew our missionary commitment.
As part of our response to this call to mission, St John’s Beaumont are organising some special events:
Novena with Newman
Among the preparations for the forthcoming canonisation of Blessed John Henry Newman, 13th October 2019, is a special novena, or nine days of prayer. The whole school will be participating in this novena in union with the global Catholic community as a time of special grace.
We would warmly invite parents and families to join with us by following the link: newmancanonisation.com/novena to access the prayers for the coming novena.
Clothing Recycling
As part of our call to action, we will be working in collaboration with The Salvation Army to fundraise through their clothing recycling initiative: Recycle with Michael. We would greatly appreciate your support in the form of donations.
At the beginning of October we will send you collection bags to fill with good-quality, unwanted clothing and shoes. The Salvation Army will then send authorised collectors to pick up the donations on Friday 18th October. Once you have collected any unwanted items, we would politely request that they do not come into school any earlier than the afternoon of Thursday 17th October.
Shortly after the collection, The Salvation Army will send us a report of how much we have raised through donations and will send a certificate for us to display at school.
The money raised from the sale of the donations will be split equally between The Salvation Army and our nominated charity: Mission Together – the Catholic Church’s official children’s charity for overseas mission and the children’s branch of Missio.
This year’s campaign focuses on St John’s Care Centre, South Africa. Established by the Sisters in 1998, St John’s initially cared for adults infected by HIV and AIDS. Over time, their focus shifted to the care of children orphaned by the virus and/or living with HIV themselves. Since 2010, St John’s has been a centre solely for children.

The Sisters provide the children with pastoral care and create a stable and loving home environment. The children learn that they are important members of God’s family with responsibility to love themselves, other people, and all God’s creation.
